Bacterial epibiont communities of panmictic Antarctic krill are spatially structured

چکیده

Abstract Antarctic krill ( Euphausia superba ) are amongst the most abundant animals on Earth, with a circumpolar distribution in Southern Ocean. Genetic and genomic studies have failed to detect any population structure for species, suggesting single panmictic population. However, hyper‐abundance of slows rate genetic differentiation, masking potential underlying structure. Here we use high‐throughput sequencing bacterial 16S rRNA genes show that epibiont communities exhibit spatial structuring, driven mainly by distance rather than environmental factors, especially strongly krill‐associated bacteria. Estimating ecological processes driving community turnover indicated this was dispersal limitation increasing geographic distance. Furthermore, divergent generated from swarm split between aquarium tanks under near‐identical conditions suggests physical isolation itself can cause diverge. Our findings geographically structured, direct contrast lack observed data.

Impact of climate change on Antarctic krill

Antarctic krill Euphausia superba (hereafter ‘krill’) occur in regions undergoing rapid environmental change, particularly loss of winter sea ice. During recent years, harvesting of krill has in creased, possibly enhancing stress on krill and Antarctic ecosystems. Here we review the overall impact of climate change on krill and Antarctic ecosystems, discuss implications for an ecosystem-based f...

Metagenomic Analysis of Bacterial Communities of Antarctic Surface Snow

The diversity of bacteria present in surface snow around four Russian stations in Eastern Antarctica was studied by high throughput sequencing of amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments and shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Considerable class- and genus-level variation between the samples was revealed indicating a presence of inter-site diversity of bacteria in Antarctic snow. Flavobacterium was a majo...

A lipid budget for Antarctic krill

Microplankton at five sites off South Georgia in January to February 1991 was dominated by a range of diatoms. The haptophyte Phaeocystis was present in three of the five sites but in low abundance only. Diatoms dominated at a more southerly site near the Antarctic Peninsula in March, whereas dinoflagellates dominated at a site near Deception Island. Multivariate analysis allowed the seven site...

Adult Antarctic Krill Feeding at Abyssal Depths

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a large euphausiid, widely distributed within the Southern Ocean [1], and a key species in the Antarctic food web [2]. The Discovery Investigations in the early 20(th) century, coupled with subsequent work with both nets and echosounders, indicated that the bulk of the population of postlarval krill is typically confined to the top 150 m of the water colum...

Gap formation following climatic events in spatially structured plant communities

Gaps play a crucial role in maintaining species diversity, yet how community structure and composition influence gap formation is still poorly understood. We apply a spatially structured community model to predict how species diversity and intraspecific aggregation shape gap patterns emerging after climatic events, based on species-specific mortality responses. In multispecies communities, aver...
